Adding from SolidWorks

Exporting from SolidWorks

Learn how to export files from SolidWorks and import them into Campfire

File Import

We recommend the following process for exporting from SolidWorks:

Pack and Go:

Use the Pack and Go feature in SolidWorks to bundle all associated files into a single folder or ZIP file:

  • Go to File > Pack and Go.
  • Select all dependencies and compress the files.
  • Share the resulting ZIP file.

Exporting to other formats:

Supported Export Formats in SolidWorks.

  • STEP (.STEP/.STP): Retains full 3D geometry and is widely compatible across CAD platforms.
  • IGES (.IGS/.IGES): Good for surfaces and curves, but not as robust as STEP for assemblies.
  • Parasolid (.X_T.X_B): Useful for high-precision solid models, often supported in engineering tools.

Material Import

Step 1: Assign a Material (for Physical Properties)

1. Open your part or assembly in SOLIDWORKS.

2. Go to the FeatureManager Design Tree (left panel).

3. Right-click the part/assembly name (or a specific body/feature).

4. Select Material → Edit Material.

5. In the Material Database, choose a material (e.g., Wood - Maple or Aluminum 6061).

6. Click Apply and then Close.

🔹 What Happens?

  • This assigns mass, density, and physical properties.
  • default appearance (color) is applied but may not include textures.

Step 2: Apply or Change an Appearance (for Visual Texture)

1. Open the Appearances Tab:

  • Click the “Display Manager” (the tab with a red/blue sphere icon) on the left.
  • Select the “Appearances” (ball icon) tab.

2. Choose or Modify an Appearance:

  • Right-click the existing appearance (if one is already applied).
  • Select Edit Appearance to change texture settings.
  • OR Click the “+” icon to add a new appearance.

3. Apply a Realistic Wood Texture:

  • Expand “Appearances” → “Organic” → “Wood”.
  • Drag & drop a wood texture onto your model.
  • A pop-up will ask where to apply it—choose Face, Body, Part, or Assembly.

4. Adjust Texture Settings:

  • Click “Advanced” to adjust scale, rotation, and mapping.
  • Use the “Mapping” tab to fine-tune texture placement.
  • Click OK when done.

Step 3: Exporting (with Textures)

1. Go to File → Pack and Go.

2. Ensure “Include textures and appearances” is checked.

3. Save as a SOLIDWORKS file (SLDPRT, SLDASM) or export as:

  • GLTF/GLB (best for preserving textures).
  • FBX (if your workflow supports it).
  • OBJ + MTL (must include texture files in the same folder).
